Background - Improving listening skill by using Story telling in 11th grade



INTRODUCTION
Tell me a fact and I learn. Tell me the truth and I will believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever. “An indian proverb”. This first chapter present some aspects underlying the topic of the research. It consist of the beckground of the research, the problem of the research, objective of the research, significances of the research, area of the research, and operational definition of the term.
Background of the research
Listening is one of the subject studied in the field of language arts and in the discipline of conversation analysis. It is also one  of the skill of english language that must be mastered by all of students who are learning english at their school. Willis (1981:134) lists a series of micro skill of listening which she calls enabling skill. They are :
·         Predictingwhat people are going to talk about
·         Guessing at unknown words or phrases without panic
·         Using one’s own knowledge of the subjecj to help one understand
·         Identifying relevant points (note-taking, summerizing)
·         Retaining relevant points and rejecting irrelevant information
·         Recognizing discourse markers. E.g well
·         Understanding different intonation patterns and uses of stress which give clues to the meaning and social setting
According to Bulletin (1952), listening is one of the fundamental language skills. It’s a medium through which children, young people and adults gain a large portion of their education—their information, their understanding of the world and of human affairs, their ideals, sense of vaues, and their appreciation. In this day of mass communication (much of it oral), it is of vital importance that our pupils be taught to llisten effectively and critically, he says.
In this research, researcher use a simple technique to improve the students’ listening skill  through storytelling. Anderson & Lynch  (1995:48) stated that storie are better understandable and more accurately recalled than if anybody likes to describe out of chronological sequences. And the researcher try to teach the students listening comprehension through storytelling technique in the research which is tittled by “ The effectiveness of using storytelling technique in improving the 11th grade listening comprehension in the SMP 1 Banyuwangi.
Listening comprehension development is a challenge that demands both of teacher and students attention because of the official role that listening plays in communication ( Duzzer 1997:4). Based on Phillips (2000:6) pointed out that storytelling technique has been forgotten in many educational environment and it has many an essential role in the education, especially for young learners that may inspire their imagination.
Based on the research in interviewing the English teachers in SMPN 1 Banyuwangi that the students have two meeting in a week and the teacher said that it is limited time to enhance the students skill because still there are three skills that should be mastering by the students. Student difficulties appear because they feel hard to reach what the native says, it is caused by student is not commonly listen the native speaker in often. The difficulties are also identified that student difficult to find the key word from a passage which they have been heard. So, the teacher confused to look for the best and fast way in improving students’ listening skill. In the interview, the teacher said that enhance the students’ listening skill is more difficult than teach another skill because of the media and also technique that is still not found yet. Because of this reason, the researcher made a new technique to help the teacher teach students’ listening.
Overcoming the students’ problem in the listening comprehension, the teachers’ role is very important in the teaching and learning process, especially in choosing the best teaching technique. So, inn this research, the researcher is using story telling technique to improve the students’ listening skill.
Based on the explanation above, the researcher suggest that the problems of the grade 11’ students listening skill can be solved by using story telling technique at SMP N 1 Banyuwangi in the 2014-2015 academic year

ESSAY



One of the problems which are faced by Indonesia is a prolonged economic problem. This problem is caused by high rates of poverty, which is influenced by the low human resources. The awareness of education is the biggest thing should be solved by us. In the other hand many people just finish school just to get the diploma but they cannot work. This happens because of the lack of ability or skill to work. It also happens because the parent spoil their children. The children or adolescence have to remember and know how difficult to get money. So the parent actually hold the most important role for this issue. Many unemployed are from university graduates do not have jobs. It is the cause of unemployment in Indonesia is increasing, and then impact on the economy sector of Indonesia. Therefor skill, competence, and experience should be given to adolescence through parents and school program.
           
            Skill for getting job or making workfield is very needed by fresh graduate. Because now days, number of unemployment in Indonesia is increase. In this point of view skill is creativity for having new idea, or making something that has value. In help this problem school program hold a big influence to adolescense. Seminar or workshop about how to reach rupiah in small activity will help adolescence know what they will do to the next after graduate from Senior high school. If they think that they have nothing left to learn after all the books they cracked in their school, they are often feel confused and think what should they do. So that, seminar or workshop will help them, even bussiness skills weren’t taught in class.

            Job competence is about the way comunicate, teamwork and problem solving.  How ever this is the most common area of confusion for student or adolescence, even fresh graduate when writing a CV (curriculum vitae) job aplication or attending an interview. This squences might be important to student. Commonly, this competences is only given to student in vocational high school, however student in senior high school also needs this competence. Because mostly fresh graduate from senior high school is confused. So it is will be good for school to give assential competence such as writing, presentation, and facing interview. Good comunication is two-way, and graduate job hunter need to show they can listen as well as speak out.

            Job experience is required in the reqruitment system of most companies, but question among fresh graduates is how they will get experience in the workplace if they need experience to be recruited. School program that try to solve this problem is  sending  student study or train to work in company or government company. They will learn how to work with other that have more experiences. They work is like an employee, and learn new thing. This activity has done in about 3 months without forgeting they are a student. They can study at home with handout from school. It will be their challenge to reach experience more and more during they are being an employee. After that they will get score from place they train. It  is called certificate, so school, and parrents can see how their anthusiasm. In the other hand adolescence will know how work with other in real place.

              
Therefore, school and parrents have to support this case. Because economic is the big issue that is being faced by Indonesia. While student have to study in their school and home about their academic, they also need how they will face their life in the future. So, skill, competence, and experience should be given to adolescence through parents and school program.

Abstract

Listening skill is very important for the students because listening skill make the students understand what the speaker say well. Listening very important when the students apply in society especially to communicate with someone that have English is mother tongue. In globalization era, the students are expected to be able to communicate in English. The purpose of this research is to improve the tenth grades' students listening skill using story telling technique with teacher's voice at SMAN X in the 2014/2015 which in Experimental Research Design. The participants of this research were tenth year students at SMAN X. The researcher used pre- and post tests as the tools of the research. This study also shows that storytelling can use their own voice teacher and will be easily understood by students .

a little story of my friend



She is Ilmy my best classmate. She is younger than me. tough girl is the best word to describe her. Her mother has passed away since she was in 5th grade. Then she lives both with her father. She decided to enter in islamic boarding school to her senior high school.nshe graduated in 2012, and she works at junior high school as a teacher and school staff. Her purposes are to share her knowledge, and develope her skill. Now, she becomes a wife, she has been merried since 26th of April 2014. God is always fine to her. She gonna be a mother, her pragnant on 6 month now. For the next, she just wishes for having baby safely, health for her baby, and being a good momnfor her baby. For the last, I asked about what she mostly needs now, and she said “ I really need much attention, and loves from my parent”. She did not say about her husband. I do not want to ask why, but I wish all the best for her, and her baby, and she will be loved always.
